The short version

Instagram automation is any software action your account takes without you tapping: replying to a DM, answering a comment, liking a message, collecting a phone number. Two kinds exist, and Instagram treats them very differently. Responding automation answers people who wrote to you, through Meta's own login; that is permitted. Growth automation follows, likes and messages strangers to grow a following; that is what gets accounts restricted. This page sorts the types, shows what Instagram gives you for free, and says when a paid tool pays off.

The types

TypeWhat it doesStatus
Keyword DM replies"price" gets the price, "shipping" gets delivery timespermitted (Meta login)
Comment replies and comment-to-DMa public reply under a comment, then a DM with the linkpermitted (Meta login)
Story reply automationa reply to your story gets an answerpermitted (it is a DM)
Forms in DMsquestions asked one at a time, answers saved as leadspermitted
AI repliesan assistant answers what no rule caughtpermitted (replies only to people who wrote)
Scheduled postingposts published at a set timepermitted (Meta Business Suite or tools on Meta's API)
Mass DMsmessages to people who never wrote to yourestricted

The line runs between answering people who contacted you and acting on people who did not.

What Instagram gives you for free

  • Saved replies in the app: texts you insert with a shortcut, sent by hand.
  • Instant reply and away message in Meta Business Suite: one fixed text to everyone who writes, or outside your hours.
  • Frequently asked questions: a few tappable questions with fixed answers.
  • Custom keywords (desktop only): a fixed reply for up to five keywords or phrases, matched exactly and case-sensitively, sent after 15 minutes unless you reply first.
  • Comment to message: a message to people whose comment contains the hashtags you chose.

They are free and quick to set up, and they all share one limit: a handful of prepared texts, not a reply set that covers what people actually ask. The free options are compared in detail in free Instagram automation: what's free and what isn't.

What a paid tool adds

  • Keyword replies: the message is read, the matching reply goes out; text, image, video, audio or cards, with buttons and quick replies. Setup: Instagram DM automation.
  • Comment-to-DM: "comment LINK and I'll send it", a public reply plus one DM per comment. Setup: Instagram comment-to-DM automation.
  • Forms in DMs: questions one at a time, every answer saved as a lead, exported to Excel.
  • AI replies: an assistant answers whatever matched no rule, from a business description you wrote.
  • Safety settings: hourly send limits, reply delays, a follow requirement.

In BixoChat these are Direct Automation, Comment Automation, Form Builder, Lead Management and the AI assistant; there is no free plan, plans start at $9 a month and every plan has every feature. What it does and does not do: What is BixoChat.

The permitted way, in one rule

Connect only through Meta's own login window. Your password never reaches the tool, the permissions are listed, and you can revoke them any time. A tool that asks for your Instagram password is logging in as you, and that alone can get the account restricted. Everything else that keeps you safe is about volume and repetition: hourly send limits, several reply variants instead of one, links only to people who asked, a short delay before replies. The full list: Why Instagram restricts accounts.

When it is worth it

A solo account with a few messages a day does not need a tool. A shop, salon, course or creator who answers the same four questions all day does: price, how to order, how to pay, when it arrives. Automate those four and a person steps in only when an order needs a human. The first automation, step by step: How to use BixoChat.
